The Elder Wand

Share your Results:

Originally, the Elder Wand was just a legend, it is said to have been created by death itself as the first of the Deathly Hallows for Antioch Peverell, who requested the most powerful wand in existence. It is said that the one who unites the wand with the two other Deathly Hallows, the Cloak of Invisibility and the Resurrection Stone, would become the Master of Death. At the heart of the stone is a Thestral Tail Hair, a rare substance from a creature that can only be seen by a wizard who has witnessed death. Its best known possessor is Albus Dumbledore, although it was previously handled by Grindelwald and, briefly, by Lord Voldemort. Dumbledore became the most powerful wizard in the world, and was a rare owner of the wand who used it for good.
Tom Riddle's Wand

Formerly known as Tom Riddle, Lord Voldemort ruled the world of wizards with immense power until his defeat at the Battle of Hogwarts. Before he stole the Elder Wand from Dumbledore's tomb, his own Wand made of Yew and Phoenix feather shared a connection with Harry's, although his was much more powerful. From an early age, Tom Riddle was already gifted in non-verbal magic, having the ability to move objects, set fires, and command people to perform tasks for him without saying a word, a skill that some wizards still struggle to master as an adult. Inventor of a number of spells, Voldemort is the only wizard who can fly, commands an army of Inferi (resurrected corpses) and is the only known person to have created multiple Horcruxes, an object of dark magic that protects its creator from death.
Gellert Grindelwald's Wand

Share your Results:

Before Lord Voldemort started the Second Wizarding War, the closest dark wizard to magical domination was Grindelwald, a student at Durmstrang and an old close friend of Albus Dumbledore, before a duel led to the death of Albus' sister. Even before he got his hands on the magic wand, Grindelwald was an extremely powerful wizard. Known as one of Durmstrang's most brilliant students, he took advantage of the school's indulgence of the dark arts and became proficient in all kinds of magical practices. His talents as a duellist were matched only by those of Albus Dumbledore, and his extensive imitation of the Percival Graves is a sign of his immense talent in the Transfiguration. He was so gifted in the dark arts that he was eventually expelled from Durmstrang for experimenting with dark spells on his classmates.
Severus Snape's Wand

Share your Results:

The head of Slytherin has made the seven years at Hogwarts a living hell with his strict and biased teaching. A former Death Eater, Snape was gifted for the dark arts and methods of protection against them. His true talents were in the making of potions, which required a wizard's intuition that few wizards possessed to reach the most advanced levels of the art. In addition to alchemy and dark magic, Snape was also gifted with Occlumination and Legilimence, the ability to protect his mind and read others. His ability to protect his thoughts from Voldemort, considered the greatest legilimator in the world of wizards, places his skills in defense against the dark arts among the most powerful.
Minerva McGonagall's Wand

Share your Results:

One of the finest and most intelligent witches of her age, McGonagall came to Hogwarts as a professor of Transfiguration, one of the most complex magical disciplines that only the most advanced students could master. Like three of the four Marauders, she was able to transform herself into a tiger cat in an instant, one of her many talents with Transfiguration. She was also a very skillful duellist, who stood up to Professor Snape at the beginning of the Battle of Hogwarts. The most obvious proof of her witchy powers is her contribution to the defenses of Hogwarts, through which she was able to transfigure all the school's armor to protect its borders, a skill far beyond the abilities of most witches and wizards. She was able to do something similar in The Sorcerer's Stone, which she protected with an enchanted chess set.
Filius Flitwick's Wand

Share your Results:

Once considered a half elf, Ravenclaw's leader and professor of charm at Hogwarts is actually of goblin ancestry, but don't be fooled by his small stature. Flitwick is not only one of the smartest tutors in the school, he's also a skilled and talented magician. Not only has he demonstrated talent in a wide range of complicated spells, Flitwick is also a former dueling champion. Despite his age, he has successfully defeated a number of Death Eaters during the Battle of Hogwarts, including Anton Dolohov, who previously murdered Alastor Moody and Remus Lupin. His skills in defense against the dark arts were also decisive in the final battle. Leading the early defenses of the battle, Flitwick invoked shield charms, concealment and protection spells that only Voldemort himself was powerful enough to break through, proof of his superiority as a sorcerer.

About Our Pottermore (inspired) Wand Quiz

Raw magic is potent but unwieldy, and requires a ton of concentration to use properly. Wizards have been using wands for thousands of years as a focusing tool for their powers, allowing them to cast spells with ease and conjure far more complex incantations.

Magic is usually performed through a combination of wand use and the spell’s corresponding incantation, although experienced wizards can cast spells non-verbally with a few movements of their wand.

A wand is made of a wand core and wand wood. The wand core is the magical component of a wand, separated into three supreme core materials among others. Unicorn hair is the most common, reliable and versatile wand core. They create faithful wands that are resistant to the corruption of the Dark Arts, seldom fail, and wither when used inappropriately.

Dragon heartstring, on the other hand, is the most powerful core, but is also the most volatile to cast with, and prone to being turned by evil wizards.

The rarest of the cores is the Phoenix feather, which is capable of casting the greatest range of spells if the wizard is patient enough for the wand to become accustomed to their magic. They tend to act on their own accord and are highly selective in deciding their wizard.

Wand woods also influence a wand’s power and personality. Harry’s wand is made out of rare holly, a wood that is ascribed with protective properties and a connection with inner darkness. Hermione also has a rare wand wood, vine, which the legendary wandmaker Ollivander has related to figures who seek a great destiny. Draco Malfoy’s wand is made of hawthorn, a contradictory wand of healing and deathly energies.

Wandlore is the study of wands, and wandmakers are a vital part of the wizarding world. The premier wandmaker in Great Britain is the Ollivander family, which has been making the tools for millennia. Other regions in the world have their own wandmaker lineages. The fabled Elder Wand, handled by Dumbledore, is rumoured to have been made by Death, or at the very least, Antioch Peverell. There is an intricate system of laws and rights that bind wizarding societies worldwide, which is important in controlling the power of wand magic from abuse.

Through Pottermore’s expansion of the lore, it seems the knowledge of wands extends back to some 2,500 years ago, at the very least.

FAQ Harry Potter Wands

What is Harry’s wand made of?

Harry’s original wand was a soft and supple instrument, rumoured to be a “brother” of Voldemort’s own wand, due to the shared origin of the rare wand cores. It had a core made from a Phoenix’s feather embedded in a holly base. It was broken in 1997 but repaired the following year through Harry’s use of the Elder Wand. Ollivander, upon discovering Potter, remarked at how compatible the wand was with the young wizard.

Is the Elder Wand the strongest wand?

Albus Dumbledore’s legendary Elder Wand is simply the strongest wand in the Harry Potter series by far. Pottermore estimates that the wand is unconquerable, and in the wrong hands, it could lead its user to ruling the entire world through the potency and depth of its magic. It has a core of uncommon Thestral hair, which is closely tied to deathly power. Its power has only been compounded from centuries of learning from its master wielders.

Where do wizards get their wands?

Wandmakers dot the entire world, established in secret to cater to the needs of the wizarding populace. Most of these businesses have a long history behind them, and prefer to use cores and woods which are related to the local folklore; where British wandmakers use unicorn hair and dragon heartstrings for cores, North American makers utilize Rougarou hair and Thunderbird feathers. Ollivanders Wand Shop is among the most prominent in the Western hemisphere. Other wandmakers include Gregorovitch in Eastern Europe and Violetta Beauvais in the United States.
