About Our Pottermore Patronus Quiz

Even the greatest wizards can struggle with using Expecto Patronum to summon their own spirit guardian. It is among the most advanced spells in existence, and its successful casting is decided by the wizard’s worthiness and character.

Composed of positive energy and capable of fending off Dementors if they were strong enough to be tangible, one’s Patronus is a beacon of silvery light against dark forces. It is a symbol of a wizard’s subconscious self when it is awakened in times of crisis or great evil. Against hostile forces, it acts as a powerful defensive charm that protects its master at all costs.

Many wizards are only able to summon incorporeal Patronuses, which are formless masses of glowing, silver-white mist, and offer a slight amount of protection. Corporeal Patronuses, on the other hand, take on the forms of different creatures, from the mundane mouse or dog, to large animals such as deer or lions, and even legendary beasts like dragons and unicorns. While the sizes and rarities of their forms differ, they have no relation to the charm’s actual power. In fact, one of the greatest Patronuses, having taken down scores of Dementors, took the form of a simple mouse.

Just as no two people are totally alike, each Patronus is unique to their conjurer’s personality, selecting a form and abilities that complement its user. Pottermore has created an extensive list of Patronuses derived from the ones we’ve seen in the series. For example, Albus had a Phoenix Patronus due to his pet flamebird. Hermione had an otter, Luna, a hare, and Ginny, a horse.

Patronuses are also liable to change in special circumstances, such as a romance or through a great personal revelation. Nymphadora’s Patronus changed into a wolf after falling in love with Remus Lupin, who had a lupine Patronus himself.

FAQ Harry Potter Patronus

What is the rarest Patronus?

According to the Pottermore website, the most elusive Patronus is the sea-soaring albatross. This large bird can be summoned by the fewest fans of the Wizarding World. It is said that wizards who have an albatross as their spirit guardian tend to be happy-go-lucky and prefer throwing their caution to the wind, much like the free-spirited albatross.

Which is the strongest Patronus in the series?

In terms of raw power and rarity, the phoenix guardian that Dumbledore can conjure is a legendary Patronus and deserving of the title of being the best. This burning blue flame-bird easily extinguished dozens of Dementors to protect the happiness of Hogwarts’ hopefuls. The brilliance of Dumbledore’s Patronus is a symbol of his shining hope and optimism for his students and the future. Other contenders include Harry’s stag, a concentrated form of his happiest memories, and Snape’s doe.

How can you cast a Patronus charm?

Casting the spell, Expecto Patronum, is a daunting task for even the most experienced of wizards. If the charm detects that you are anything less than worthy, your wand might vomit forth maggots instead of a spirit guardian. Expecto Patronum is cast by concentrating on one’s happiest memories while drawing circles with their wand to charge the spell’s power. The spell is executed after reciting the magic cant, Expecto Patronum.
