About Our Harry Potter Sorting Hat Quiz

Before new students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry can set out on learning how to be real wizards, they attend the Sorting ceremony at the Great Hall, where they will be assigned to one of four houses named after the legendary founders of the academy, Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff.

The Sorting Hat assigned students based on the qualities that Hogwarts’ founders believed were the most important to have as wizards. Pottermore uses this same criteria to decide one’s affinity for a specific Hogwarts House.

For Godric Gryffindor, stout hearts and steely will were the distinguishing characteristics of his House. The students in this house were renowned for their skills in leadership and working in teams. Notable characters in the series that belonged to House Gryffindor include the titular protagonist, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Neville Longbottom.

The witch, Rowena Ravenclaw, on the other hand, valued logic, wit and pure intelligence as the hallmarks of a great wizard. Ravenclaw students were typically seen as more academically successful than students from other houses. Prominent Ravenclaw characters were Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood.

The Slytherins, founded by Salazar Slytherin, are certainly the most ambitious of the lot. Salazar intended his House for students who displayed the strong drive, resourcefulness, and quick cunning needed to achieve their desires. Most pure-blooded wizards belong to the Slytherins, such as Draco Malfoy, Horace Slughorn and Severus Snape himself.

And lastly, the unassuming Hufflepuffs are the successors to Helga Hufflepuff. The House values loyalty, diligence and the ability to make friends as the traits that would define a wizard and separate them from a path of evil. Cedric Diggory and Teddy Lupin both rallied under the Hufflepuff banners.

Sorting a student is usually a quick process, with most receiving their new affiliation in mere moments. There are occasions when the Sorting Hat takes far longer to sort someone, especially if the student shows the traits of multiple houses. This was the case when the Hat found Harry’s slyness and cunning and nearly sorted him into Slytherin, predicting that the young wizard would find the greatest success there. Harry, begging for another option, was ultimately placed in his family’s House, Gryffindor.

FAQ

Which Hogwarts House is the most powerful?

Gryffindor is home to some of the greatest wizards of the Harry Potter series, from the former headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, to The-Boy-Who-Lived, so they’re almost certainly the strongest of the four houses. However, Slytherin has also produced powerful spellcasters like Bellatrix, Voldemort and Snape, although it’s unfortunate that most of them have turned evil. Indeed, Pottermore has reported on the past supremacy of Slytherin against Gryffindor in fields such as the Quidditch Cup.

What is a Hatstall?

Students of whom the Sorting Hat has taken more than five minutes to sort are said to have triggered a Hatstall. This happens when the hat finds different, conflicting qualities in a student and struggles to determine the best House to develop their powers. Minerva McGonagall and Peter Pettigrew both caused a Hatstall. Pettigrew was sorted as a stalwart Gryffindor but later betrayed the academy. Near Hatstalls include Hermione, Neville and Harry.

What is the Pottermore Quiz?
